Deep Fried Uncrustables

Longing for some of those unforgettable deep fried foods from the carnival? Or looking to amp up your camping food game? With only a few simple ingredients, you can make deep fried uncrustables and have one epic snack at home or campsite.

Deep Fried Uncrustables Ingredients

Dipped in pancake batter, fried in vegetable oil, and topped with powdered sugar
  • Uncrustables (thawed) – grape or strawberry? Choose your favorite!
  • Pancake mix – prepacked mix or make your own
  • Powdered sugar – for a touch of sweet on top
  • Cooking oil – vegetable oil is the standard, peanut oil is supreme

Can You Deep Fry Frozen Food?

Carnival food at home!

For the most part, yes. Foods like mozzarella sticks, fries, breaded chicken, and even Uncrustables. Never attempt foods that are icy or have a large water content in them. For example, frozen turkey should never be deep fried from frozen. There are plenty of videos on the internet that will demonstrate why.

Which Type of Oil is Best for Deep Frying?

Vegetable oil has a smoke point of 400 degrees. Using my Thermoworks Thermapen ONE to track temps.

My favorite oil for deep frying is peanut oil. It’s rich in flavor and has a high smoke point. It is also one of the most expensive deep frying oils to use.

With that said, vegetable oil is a general, all-around oil that can handle frying temps, has good flavor, and is more affordable. Smoke point on both of these oils is between 400 to 450 degrees.

How to Make Fried Uncrustables

Perfect for camping food

Heat your cooking oil to 375 degrees. Mix pancake batter in a medium-sized mixing bowl. Once cooking oil reaches the proper temps, take your Uncrustables and dip into the pancake batter. Gently drop into the hot oil to prevent splashing. Let it cook for two minutes, flipping once during the process.

Dipping in pancake batter

Remove the deep fried Uncrustables from the oil. Place on a cutting board with at least two layers of paper towels to help absorb excess oil. Scoop some powdered sugar with a fine mesh strainer and shake over the deep fried goods. This provides a sweeter taste that cooked pancake batter needs and also has a nice presentation.

Can You Air Fry Uncrustables?

Yes, you can air fry Uncrustables. Simply skip dipping them in batter as it would be quite messy and uneven. Heat your air fryer to 375 degrees and cook for eight minutes, flipping once during the cook.

With that said, they taste better when they are battered and deep fried.

Ingredients

  • 4 Uncrustables
  • 2 cups pancake batter
  • 2 Tbsp powdered sugar
  • 1.5 quarts cooking oil

Instructions

  1. Pour cooking oil into Dutch oven or cast iron skillet and heat to 375 degrees.
  2. In a medium sized bowl, pour pancake mix and water and stir until smooth. Follow directions on pancake mix packaging.
  3. Dip Uncrustables into pancake batter one at a time and place in hot frying oil for two minutes, flipping once during the cook. Make sure not to overcrowd your pot or skillet.
  4. Remove and place on layers of paper towels to absorb excess oil.
  5. Top with powdered sugar and serve!

Notes

  1. Peanut oil is highly recommended, vegetable oil will do.
  2. Uncrustables don't need to be thawed for this recipe, but I do so they cook faster inside.
  3. These can be made either inside on the stove or outside on the grill. I prefer outside so the house doesn't smell like cooking oil.
