Grilled Sweet Potatoes

Grilled Sweet Potatoes

Grilled sweet potatoes are the perfect Thanksgiving side dish! These are essentially baked potatoes on the grill, but with the addition of a nice smoky flavor. This sweet potato recipe is more like a candied yams recipe in that we add brown sugar and marshmallows on top!

What You’ll Need for the Grilled Sweet Potatoes Recipe

The sweet potato recipe ingredients are easy to find at the grocery store. In fact, you may have most of these in your pantry already:

  • Sweet Potatoes: you can find these year-round in any produce section of the grocery store, usually right next to regular potatoes
  • Butter: what’s a baked potato without butter on top?
  • Brown Sugar: this will help these baked sweet potatoes bring a candied potatoes flavor
  • Cinnamon: adds a taste of spice and compliments the brown sugar perfectly
  • Marshmallows: the best topping for a baked candied sweet potato, adds that classic texture and flavor

How to Grill Sweet Potatoes

First thing first, preheat the grill to 400 degrees with indirect heat. Depending on the grill, it can take up to 30 minutes to get your grill to this temperature. During this time, start prepping the sweet potatoes by rinsing and scrubbing them to clean off any dirt.

Baked sweet potatoes on the grill with holes poked in them to avoid splitting.

Once they are patted dry, poke the potatoes with a fork in three separate places. This will prevent the grilled sweet potatoes from splitting open during the cook.

How to Tell When Sweet Potatoes are Done

Place the sweet potatoes on the grill and cook for an hour. The best way to tell when sweet potatoes are done cooking is to poke them with a fork or digital thermometer. Similar to checking the doneness of a baked potato. It should poke through easily, smooth like butter. If using a digital thermometer, such as the Thermoworks ONE, look for an internal temperature of 202 degrees. Remove from the grill and let them cool down before slicing them open.

The Perfect Thanksgiving Side Dish

The final step to these baked potatoes on the grill is to cut them open most of the way, leaving about an inch uncut on both ends. Spread open partway and top with butter first, then salt, brown sugar, cinnamon, and top with mini marshmallows.

If you want toasted marshmallows on top (which I prefer), then you have two choices:

  • Place the grilled sweet potatoes (with its toppings on) in the oven to broil for a few minutes
  • Use a food torch and toast the marshmallows in a manner of seconds

Toasting the marshmallows will create a Maillard reaction, which adds a distinctive flavor and is more visually appealing. This hybrid of baked sweet potato and candied sweet potato makes for the perfect Thanksgiving side dish recipe!
