Smoky Cuban Sliders

Smoky Cuban Sliders

Sliders seem to be all the craze lately and deservedly so. The are like mini versions of your favorite burger or sandwich and you don’t have to feel guilty eating multiples. This Cuban sliders recipe packs the flavor in a smaller size. They only take 15 minutes to cook on the grill, too. Follow these easy steps and make multiples of this classic sandwich in mini form!

What is a Cuban Sandwich Slider?

Traditionally, Cuban sandwiches consist of two types of pork, Swiss cheese, mustard, and pickles all packed in between Cuban bread. Ham is most commonly one of the pork products in there, with some sort of roasted pork being the other. Some variations found in parts of Florida include salami, mayo, and even tomatoes and lettuce.

Since this is a BBQ blog and I usually have some leftover pulled pork in my freezer, I’m using smoked pulled pork as the second pork product. Depending on which part of the world you live in, Cuban bread may not be readily available to you. Know that Cuban bread is white and has a similar consistency to both French and Italian breads. This type of bread is hard to find in my area, especially in slider form. For this Cuban sliders recipe, I’ll be making these Cuban sliders with Hawaiian rolls. Follow along and see how we put this together!

Assembling the Cuban Sliders

Ingredients: pulled pork, ham, Swiss cheese, pickles, mustard, butter, 11-pack of rolls.

First things first: get your grill preheated to 375 degrees over indirect heat. I prefer to use hickory as my wood flavor of choice, but use whichever you like. Get a 12-pack of connected rolls and slice them in half, creating a top and bottom bun. Next, slather mustard on the inside of the bottom half of the bun. I suggest being generous to help that flavor stand out. Next, put on about 3/4 pound of ham, spread evenly as possible. Then come the pickles! Put 2-3 pickles in three rows of four, one for where each slider is.

After that, pile on the pulled pork and spread (if you need a smoked pulled pork recipe, I have a low and slow one, as well as a hot and fast). Cover the pulled pork with two layers of Swiss cheese. With the Swiss cheese layered on, carefully put the top half of the Hawaiian sliders on top to complete the sandwich. Melt some butter and brush on the tops of the buns.

By the way, I recommend assembling this in a greased 9×11 foil pan. You will avoid a messy transition to the pan and keep all of the ingredients in tact.

Cuban Sandwich Sliders on the Grill

How many of these are you taking down?

With the grill preheated to 375 degrees and the Cuban sliders assembled, put the pan of sliders on the grill. Cuban sandwiches are known for being pressed, so you have a couple of options here: put a 12” cast iron skillet on top of the sliders or use cast iron grill grates. Or you can leave them as-is. Just know that pressing them helps make these packed sandwiches easier to eat. It may be best to have the cast iron skillet preheated before you put it on top of the Cuban Hawaiian roll sliders.

Remove pan of sliders from grill after 15 minutes and place on a cutting board. Since the foil pan is bendable, start to bend down the sides so you can remove the sliders easier. Slice into 12 individual sliders and serve!

Another slider recipe that would go well with these is the smoky ham and cheese. It is perfect if you have purchased a two-pack of Hawaiian rolls at Costco and are looking to use the extra pack for another recipe. Especially if you have extra ham and Swiss cheese left over from this recipe!

Ingredients

  • One 12-pack of connected rolls
  • 1/4 Cup mustard
  • 3/4 lbs sliced ham
  • 1/2 lbs pulled pork
  • 24-36 pickles
  • 12 slices Swiss cheese
  • 3 Tbsp butter, melted

Instructions

1. Preheat grill to 375 degrees using hickory wood over indirect heat. Slice 12-pack of rolls in the middle, separating top and bottom. Apply mustard on bottom half of rolls, then stack (in order) ham, pickles, pulled pork, and Swiss cheese. Place top halves back on top. Apply melted butter to the tops of rolls.

2. Carefully place connected sliders in a greased 9x11 foil pan. To make sliders pressed, place either 12” cast iron skillet or cast iron grates on top. Put in grill for 15 minutes. Remove from grill, remove from foil pan, and start slicing into individual sliders.

Notes

1. This is a great use of leftover pulled pork and helps add your BBQ flare to it.

2. Cuban bread is similar to French or Italian breads. If you can find these in slider form, then find a 12-pack of white rolls (preferably not sweet rolls)
